This famously fun Dutch brand creates seriously tasty salsas as well as a mysterious story about the fictitious titular character behind it all
This fun Dutch brand from Amsterdam has a range of excellent sauces, including our favourites: Salsa Picante, Salsa Verde and the extra-hot Jamaican Hot Chocolate Pepper (all available via House of Habanero).
The thing is, it's a rather mysterious brand and its back story is all about the fictitious titular character whose real name no one knows – told in graphic novel-style on its website.
El Jefe was born the son of an army General and a brothel madame in the heartland of Mexico. He had 12 sisters and was the only son, and they were all put in an orphanage where El Jefe had to make tortillas. One day, the nearby volcano erupted, putting to rest his orphanage and all his sisters, spurring El Jefe to go out in search of his father.
He travelled far and wide in his hunt and soon joined the Mexican army, climbing the ranks to become Colonel Major El Jefe. It was on the morning of the siege of Alamo that he was to meet his father, but before he could a rebel killed the General and severely scarred El Jefe’s face. He was the only soldier to survive that day.
He stumbled through the desert, wounded, tired and lost. Exhausted, he fell to his knees and had a vision of a woman with fruit dangling from her many arms. There was also a bush with sun-baked red peppers ahead. He fell forward, his face in the sand, when one single pepper fell onto his behind.
For three days it stayed there, baking slowly into him, sustaining him, reviving him. Filled with the fiery passion of revolutionary spirit, he walked from the desert to the highway and put out his thumb.
